Community Message

Wheatland EMS Est. January 1988

EMS, of course, stands for Emergency Medical Services. These words, in some sense, are in the wrong order. The smallest part of what we do involves truly time-critical life-threatening emergencies. While most of the assistance we give to the community is medical in nature, everything we do is about service: service to our patients, their families and loved ones; service to our communities; and service to the people who make up Wheatland
Emergency Medical Services.

Service is more than simply responding to calls. It is evaluating what we do so that we can improve our performance and meet new needs of patients and their families as they become apparent. Service is working with our community to help people better care for themselves and each other. It is taking care of our own people, so they are better able to serve their patients and families within our communities. Through this service, we have the opportunity to save the lives of some, and change the lives of many.

Description of Services

High Level Explanation of our Services

Wheatland EMS is a contracted ambulance service provider for Alberta Health Services stationed in Strathmore, Alberta.

We respond to 9-1-1 emergency calls (in and out of our communities) as directed by the Southern Alberta Communication Center. With EMS being a provincially run system, 9-1-1 calls are triaged and dispatched to the closest most appropriate resource. Ambulance transport destinations are based on the most appropriate hospital to treat a presenting illness or injury.

We also participate in interfacility transfers. These occur when a patient is transported from one location to another within the healthcare system. These are necessary for a variety of reasons such as advanced treatments, tests or assessments not available at a specific site or perhaps in-patient placement at another hospital.

Locally Wheatland EMS continues to provide EMS stand-by services for events such as rodeos within our traditional response area of Strathmore and  within the boundaries of Wheatland County.
